Most people often come to the conclusion that a blogger, for the most part, is surely an extravert. Who else, after all, would go out of their way to share their personal thoughts and preferences for the world to see? I must admit that i once believed the same thing, many years ago (Goodness, that makes me sound really old, doesn’t it?). Now that i’ve entered the “world of blogging”, i realise that this isn’t always the case, most bloggers are in fact quite often introverted. From my understanding, blogging is a way to connect with people, without having to go through the whole connecting with people bit.
Don’t get me wrong, i do enjoy going out and socialising with people, but only up to a certain point. I’m always content to spend time on my own, i always have been because i am an only child. I’d rather be sitting at home reading a good book or watching a TV show than joining in on a last minute plan a friend just invited me on. Last minute plans are the absolute worst! They are so anxiety-enducing, i’m sure some of you know what i mean. Plus, if i do somehow drag myself to a party, i always feel the need to “recharge” for several hours after said party is over.
A long time ago, i came to the realisation that i only feel lonely in a crowd, never when i’m on my own. Is that strange? Perhaps to some people it might be.I have no idea.
The reason why i’m getting into this is because, well, you guessed it, i’m an introvert. It took me nearly a year to finally start this blog . I’ve always felt like i’d rather be reading a blog than writing posts on one. I finally decided to just go for it and see what happens and surprisingly it’s actually been quite lovely. It’s nice to write about something that you love, to have someone write back to you and tell you that they love it too. Or to write about something that irks you beyond belief and have someone tell you “Girl, i feel you.” (You know who you are, lol). It’s not always perfect though, things seldom are. Sometimes it may feel like a chore, which is why i’ve decided to write only when i have the time to do it and feel inspired to write something.
I should probably explain to you what being introverted means, by the way. Being introverted isn’t the same as being shy. In psychology, introverted people tend to be inward turning, or focused more on internal thoughts, feelings and moods rather than seeking out external stimulation. According to many theories of personality, everyone has some degree of both introversion and extraversion. However, people often tend to lean one way or the other. In my case, i lean towards the introversion side.
What i’m trying to say is that you do not need to be an extrovert to start a blog, or a youtube channel, or even a public intstagram page. You just need to go for it when it feels right to you, and you will find out that it is actually cathartic, it helps you notice and capture things differently, it helps you self-reflect and it is a great way to connect with people who you share similar interests with.
I’ll write a more detailed post on the various personality traits held by introverts and extroverts soon so just keep checking my blog for an update, or subscribe so that you can receive an email whenever i post something! You can find the link on my homepage.
Now, i’m off to read a book. Like i said, i’d rather be reading… 😉
